Habit

Deciduous tree, often found along streams and rivers. Male flowers in catkins, up to 19 cm long. Female flowers in erect, mostly solitary "woody cones", 3-3.5 cm x about 1.2 cm.

Uses

The bark is used for dyeing and tanning. The wood is used for construction where better timber is not available. It is also used as a street tree and for firewood.
