Temperate forests, forest edges, and slopes at 1500-3500m prefers well drained acidic soils and sunny locations.

Large evergreen shrub or small tree 5-20m tall.showy, bright red ,pink or white clusster in spring ; bell -shaped corolla flowers. Bark; smooth and gray brown when young , becoming rough with age.
