Sambhar Deer

The Sambar Deer is the largest deer species found in the Indian subcontinent and inhabits forests across Himachal Pradesh. It is recognised by its dark brown coat, large ears, and the impressive three-tined antlers of the male. Primarily active during dawn and dusk, it feeds on grasses, leaves, fruits, and young shoots. As an important herbivore, the Sambar plays a vital role in maintaining forest ecosystems and serves as a key prey species for large carnivores such as the leopard. It is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
